Refine your skills. Sail with confidence.

The ASA 102 – Keelboat Sailing 2 course builds on the fundamentals learned in ASA 101 and takes your sailing ability to the next level. This course focuses on boat handling, sail trim, and upwind sailing techniques, giving you the confidence to sail efficiently and independently in a wider range of conditions.

Accredited by the American Sailing Association, ASA 102 is an internationally recognized certification and a key step toward bareboat cruising and advanced sailing courses.

Who is ASA 102 for?

This course is ideal for:

  • Graduates of ASA 101

  • Sailors who can get a boat moving but want more control and confidence

  • Anyone looking to sail upwind effectively and smoothly

  • Sailors preparing for bareboat cruising or advanced certifications

If you’ve ever felt like the boat was sailing you instead of the other way around, this course fixes that.

18 years old or more. ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing certification.

The ASA system has eight primary levels of student certification from Basic Keelboat all the way to Offshore Passage making. Whether your goal is to skipper a bareboat charter in the Caribbean or to crew confidently on a short weekend sail, the ASA’s sailing-education system will guide you as you learn the theory behind sailing, practice the skills needed to handle a sailboat, and build the foundation of knowledge that will enable you to navigate a vessel safely and within the law.

ASA 102 is all about refinement and control. You’ll move beyond basic operation and begin sailing with purpose and precision.

Key skills covered include:

Efficient sail trim for all points of sail

Sailing upwind (close-hauled and close reach)

Tacking and jibing with improved boat balance

Understanding sail shape, draft, and telltales

Boat speed awareness and performance tuning

Improved helmsmanship and crew coordination

Heaving-to and controlled stopping

Reefing and sail handling techniques

By the end of the course, you’ll understand why the boat behaves the way it does—and how to make it work for you.
